Orton-Gillingham Method for Reading

Orton-Gillingham is a multisensory, structured, sequential, cumulative, cognitive, and flexible approach to language instruction. As a language based program, it is adaptable to specific students needs. It is a philosophy more than just a system to teach children how to read.

Language Based
Orton Gillingham is a technique of studying and teaching language, as well as understanding the nature of human language, the mechanisms involved in learning, and the language-learning process. Students learn the sound system of the language which is the foundation for reading and spelling.

Multisensory
The Orton-Gillingham approach is multisensory. Sessions are action-oriented with auditory, visual, and kinesthetic elements reinforcing each other for optimal learning. Spelling is taught simultaneously with reading. In this respect, Orton-Gillingham differs from traditional phonics instruction.

Association Method Instruction

The Association Method is an instructional strategy used to increase the understanding and use of oral language, improve articulation, and teach reading and written composition skills.  This systematic, incremental approach is multisensory and phonetically-based.  It has been proven to be effective with hearing impaired, language-disordered, and dyslexic children.  This approach has also recently been successfully adapted to teach children with autism.
